Beth Spencer's first book of fiction, *How to Conceive of a Girl*, was published by Vintage/Random House, and was runner up for the Steele Rudd Award. Her writing has been published in newspapers, anthologies and collections, in academic journals and on ABC Radio, and she has received several fellowships from the Literature Board of the Australia Council. She was awarded a PhD in 2006.
